RUMOR ROUNDUP: WWE DRAFT, SWERVE PROMO, AEW INJURY, TONY KHAN RATINGS, MORE!

Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.

Important reminder: Rumors are just that — rumors. None of this has been confirmed as fact, it’s just circulating around the pro wrestling rumor mill. We track rumor accuracy in a weekly feature called Rumor Look Back you can find here. Remember, take it all with a grain of salt.

Rumors for the Day:

  • Wrestling Observer Live’s Bryan Alvarez says Powerhouse Hobbs suffered a legitimate knee injury in his IWGP world heavyweight title match against Jon Moxley on Dynamite. “There was more they were going to do” in the match, but it was cut short due to the injury. Alvarez does not know anything yet about the severity of Powerhouse’s injury.
  • Fightful Select found out why AEW held off on Swerve Strickland’s first promo as world champion until Saturday’s episode of Collision, rather than this week’s Dynamite. The idea is that Saturday night’s NBA playoffs game between the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat on TNT will provide AEW’s best lead-in audience of 2024, which should benefit Swerve for his show-opening interview.
  • According to PW Insider, WWE Hall of Famers Alundra Blayze, Teddy Long, Torrie Wilson, and JBL will be in attendance for tonight’s WWE Draft episode of SmackDown. Michelle McCool is also expected to be there.
  • F4WOnline’s Dave Meltzer claims that Tony Khan is hot-shotting angles on AEW television right now because it’s a critical period for boosting AEW ratings as the company negotiates a new TV deal with Warner Bros. Discovery.
  • Variety notes that Chris Jericho’s horror movie Dark Match will premiere “later this year,” and that Blue Finch Films has purchased worldwide distribution rights for the film.
  • For what it’s worth, Alvarez believes that AEW Women’s World Champion “Timeless” Toni Storm turned babyface on this week’s Dynamite.
